Plastics Watch Fall 2015

Every year, plastics become more and more ingrained into the global industrial network. This is due in part to plastics offering a range of benefits that exceed most other alternative materials like glass, steel, and paper. Plastic is also affordable and easy to manufacture, lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and extremely durable and long-lasting.

Here, US Cast, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of acrylic rods and tubes, highlights some of this fall’s top stories in the plastics industry.

Plastics Recycling Continues to Grow

Plastic plays an important role in our economy and environmental responsibility because it is one of the few materials that can be recycled and reused again and again. As a result, plastics recycling is continuing to grow across the nation with the byproducts of recycling finding uses in a variety of new products.

Plastics recycling also has a direct impact on the environment. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), when a product is made using recycled plastic, the process uses approximately 87% less energy than it would to produce the same product using virgin plastic. In 2012 alone, recyclers in the United States recovered more than 1 billion pounds of post-consumer non-bottle rigid plastics.

Plastics Being Looked At For Wind Turbine Blades

Wind-generated power is a reliable and sustainable form of energy production and it is fast growing in popularity on both the industrial and consumer sides, but it isn’t without its drawbacks. In particular, the blades that are attached to the turbines. Currently, wind turbine blades are extraordinarily heavy and expensive to manufacture and this is leading researchers to find new and more innovative ways to upgrade the essential components. Plastics are being looked at as an alternative material due to the fact that it is lightweight and capable of withstanding the demand expected of a turbine blade. With lighter, longer, and more durable blades, wind turbines will be able to produce more energy more reliably.

The Use of Polymer Chameleons On the Rise

Polymer chameleons, the stimuli-responsive polymers that are able to undergo rapid changes in their microstructure whenever the environment triggers them, are finding their way into more and more industries and uses. Areas of increased use include drug delivery applications, chips and biofilms, and throughout the healthcare industry and the technology is expected to reach commercialization within three to four years.
